Do you ever grow out of your childhood loneliness?

As a child, I always felt like I was the odd one out. I could never relate to the kids my age, I was alone often and never had any interest in making or keeping friends. Sure I felt weird and sad that I didn't have the friendships that other did; but even when I did try it was never sustainable. I though that maybe the older I got, the better I would get at keeping people in my life. However, that doesn't seem to be the case.

I was a lonely child despite having two younger siblings. They were closer in age and I was the bossy older sister so naturally they stuck together and I was just there. Being alone eventually developed into my safe space, it was all I really knew and I can't help but wonder if that is why I still haven't changed. I love to be alone, maybe a little more than most, but sometimes it makes me feel weird. It takes so much effort and energy for me to leave the house and yes, I know that sounds like depression, but lets put that on the back burner for now. Social events take me days to recover from and If I didn't force myself to go out I honestly never would. As I watch my siblings make constant plans with friends I can't help but wonder why I too cannot derive happiness from being with others.
